How It All Started

Van de Kamp’s fish is the start of delicious family meals! But, where did we get our start?

The Van de Kamp’s brand began in 1915 as part of a Los Angeles potato chip stand founded by Theodore J. Van de Kamp, his sisters Marian and Henrietta, and Lawrence L. Frank. They expanded the business to baked goods and by the mid-1950s evolved into a local restaurant chain specializing in batter-fried halibut. Later the restaurants were sold and the focus turned to producing frozen foods, including a line of frozen fish with batters unique to the market.

A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Our seafood is sourced from fisheries certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

Over 3 billion people rely on seafood as a significant source of protein,1 which makes it even more important to source fish from farmers that avoid overfishing and protect biodiversity.
At Van de Kamp’s, 99% of our wild-caught seafood is certified sustainable by MSC meaning that the seafood you enjoy is sourced with MSC’s Chain of Custody Standard.

Why MSC?

MSC Logo

The MSC Fisheries Standard is based on the FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Through a rigorous assessment process, MSC certification provides assurance that fish stocks are being harvested at a sustainable level, that impacts on marine ecosystems are minimized, and that fisheries are well managed. The MSC fisheries program incentivizes improvement, with 92% of certified fisheries making specific improvements as a condition of certification. These improvements have positive impacts not only for fish stocks, but also for sea birds, sea mammals, sharks, rays, turtles, and their marine habitat.

MSC Annual Report 2019
